POKOTABI / Kaede-an
楓庵
Neighborhood soba specialist Kaede-an in Higashioi offers classics from chilled mori and duck seiro to fragrant curry nanban, hearty rice bowls, and bento sets pairing noodles with side dishes and rice.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Whether you are craving chilled mori soba or a rice bowl brimming with savory dashi broth, Kaede-an in Shinagawa's Higashioi neighborhood is the kind of neighborhood noodle shop you turn to whenever you need an unfussy, satisfying meal. The menu covers all the everyday essentials—chilled mori and zaru soba, duck seiro, warming curry nanban, flat kishimen noodles, and even ramen—ready to match whatever you feel like eating.
During lunchtime, diners can also build their meal around a bento set option. Adding it to your choice of soba or udon rounds out the tray with daily side dishes, steamed rice, and pickles, turning a simple bowl of noodles into a balanced teishoku-style spread. Pairing plain chilled mori soba with those sides and rice makes for a particularly well-rounded lunch.
The rice bowls, seasoned with the shop's dashi, are just as central to the experience. Alongside classics like katsudon and oyakodon, the kitchen turns out hearty comfort fare such as kaikadon, curry don, and katsu curry don. With their robust seasonings and generous portions, these bowls are an easy fix on hungry days.
A short lineup of side dishes—including itawasa sliced fish cake, edamame, seared duck with leeks, and simmered pork offal stew—lends itself just as well to a relaxed post-work drink as it does to a quiet weekend meal. Keep in mind that payment is cash only, so it is best to have bills ready before you visit.
